“YOU can’t win anything with kids.” So said former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen when commenting on the Manchester United team in the English Premier League back in August 1995.

He was dead wrong. The young team, whose average age was 26 years and 137 days, won the Premier League and the FA Cup and went on to become legendary.

Attacker Mohd Amri Yahyah was the oldest at 29 while defender Fadhli Shas was the youngest player at the tender age of 19. In 2018, Vietnam banked on their youth to win the Suzuki Cup, and the team with an average age of 24.7 upstaged Malaysia in the final. The Harimau Malaya’s squad current average age is 24.5 and it seems they will be the favourites if the falling average age trend continues.

“Young players offer speed, intensity, energy, and enthusiasm so you can see why European teams have a large number of youngsters... the trend in Asia is now mimicking the trend in Europe,” said the former international. Malaysia have the Presidents Cup and Youth Cup but the talents being churned out from these tournaments are just not good enough to step up to international levels. A lot of work still has to be done at the grassroots level to produce more Fadhli Shas.
