A nonpartisan group wants to create hubs in southern Dallas and other states to educate Black communities about voting rights and voter suppression

Dosunmu, an Oak Cliff native, is the founder and chief strategist of Young Black Lawyer’s Organizing Coalition or YBLOC, a Dallas-based nonpartisan grassroots network that educates Black communities about voting rights and voter suppression for seven states: Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Michigan, South Carolina and North Carolina. YBLOC began in 2019 while Dosunmu was a law student at New York University. He took fellow students to South Carolina to connect with community leaders, residents and churches to discuss voting rights. YBLOC has about 100 members who focus on conversations about voter suppression — such as misinformation and late openings of polling locations — and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the ways it has changed over time.came along and completely undermined that,” Dosunmu said. “What happened almost overnight is that you saw states like Texas and others enact voter suppression laws and policies that disproportionately impact communities of color.
