Australia’s Defence Force Chief has unleashed on Jacqui Lambie during a fiery exchange in senate estimates.
General Angus Campbell accused Senator Lambie of “grossly and maliciously” misrepresenting a defence force pay decision in order to “drive a wedge” between diggers and senior command, telling the Tasmanian independent: “You should be ashamed of yourself”.
Australian Defence Force Chief, General Angus Campbell, has unleashed on Jacqui Lambie, accusing the Tasmanian senator of"grossly and maliciously" misrepresenting the facts during a fiery senate estimates exchange. Picture: Parliament of Australia. But Senator Lambie demanded to know why “a few days before the diggers were given a pay cut” senior defence officials were given “an extra 39,000 bucks a year” on top of their salaries.
He then asked a department official to explain the issue “in simple clear terms for everybody at home to understand.” “So there they have been given nothing extra? They've been given the same deal as the diggers have been given, is that what you're telling me? There's no extra for senior command?” Senator Lambie angrily responded. This prompted a furious rebuke from General Campbell.
“My question is, is the senior brass getting exactly the same pay rises and nothing extra; like the diggers? That's all I'm asking you,” Senator Lambie asked in a calmer manner. Later in the day, Senator Lambie refused to back down and said it was"obvious" the chief of defence thought there were clear divisions between senior command and lower members of the force.
