ENTERPRISE, Ala. - Downtown Enterprise will host its 33rd annual World’s Smallest St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, a tradition that began with one idea and grew into a world record. The parade steps off at noon along East College Street, stretching from the courthouse to the Boll Weevil Monument — a distance of about 800 feet.
Decades ago, Kathleen Sauer and Lucy Klein founded the event. In a city already known for the world’s only monument to an agricultural pest, the two women saw an opportunity for another only-in-Enterprise moment. Donnia Rambin, with the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, said the parade reflects the community’s character. “I think that Enterprise is a very unique community in general,” Rambin said. “There’s not any other cities that I know of in the nation that gives tribute to a bug. And the world’s smallest St. Patrick’s Day is just another tribute to how unique Enterprise really is.” Rambin said. For Elizabeth Shanks, owner of Milky Moo’s Creamery, the parade has been part of her business and her life for 21 years. “I think it’s just so much fun, and it gives the community such an opportunity to get involved, even in kind of this almost in-between season, if you will,” Shanks said. “We’re not in winter. It’s not Christmas anymore. It’s past Valentine’s Day. We’re not quite at spring. So, it really offers something a lot of fun in this in-between time.”“It shows just how unique we are and how we can really turn something big into something very small,” she said. The 33rd annual World’s Smallest St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off Saturday at noon. It will be followed by the “Half-Pint” 0.5K.
