Ex Machina is preparing to exit Netflix's streaming lineup in the coming weeks.
The movie lineup on Netflix is always changing, as streaming licenses for movies and TV shows are constantly kicking in or coming to a close.
July is obviously no exception to the Netflix turnover patterns, and the end of the month will see a slew of great titles make their way off of the streamer's lineup in the United States. Among them, unfortunately, is an instant classic sci-fi thriller from 2013 that has continued to make new fans — and become even more relevant — over the last decade-plus.
Ex Machina, Alex Garland's minimalist tech-thriller about the creation of an artificially intelligent robot, hit audiences like a freight train when it sped into theaters 13 years ago. It is now thought of as one of the best sci-fi movies of the 2010s, and it has become a genre staple on streamers like Netflix. Sadly, Ex Machina will be exiting Netflix's lineup before the month of July is through, leaving a major hole in the streamer's movie lineup.
'Ex Machina' Leaving Netflix Netflix has confirmed that Ex Machina will be one of the many titles leaving the service at the end of July. Recently, the dreaded"Leaving Soon" banner was added to Ex Machina's poster on the Netflix website and app, and clicking over to the title page breaks the news that the final day to stream the film on Netflix will be July 31st. Ex Machina is far from the only big movie title set to leave the Netflix lineup on the final day of July, though Garland's thriller is one of the only major exits in the sci-fi space.
Other big titles exiting Netflix on July 31st include Kindergarten Cop, National Lampoon's Animal House, The Secret Life of Pets, Smokey and the Bandit, Click, American Gangster, Borat, and all three Meet the Parents movies. Netflix hasn't yet released its newsletter for the month of August, so we don't know exactly which movie titles will be brought in to replace the departing films on August 1st. However, there's always a substantial list of new additions on the first day of any month, so you can probably expect some big titles arriving to fill in the gaps being left by Ex Machina and the others.
Where to Watch 'Ex Machina' The silver lining regarding the Ex Machina departure is that the movie isn't only available on Netflix. This wasn't some exclusive deal where it was only ever available on Netflix. One of A24's early breakouts, Ex Machina has had a presence on all sorts of different streamers, and that isn't about to change. Alongside Netflix, other streaming services currently hosting Ex Machina include Tubi, YouTube, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, and Kanopy.
Unlike Netflix, all of those services are completely free . It has been confirmed that Tubi and Hoopla will also be losing Ex Machina on July 31st, but the others have given no indication of an exit at this time. There's also the option of buying a physical copy of Ex Machina, which will always be the best choice when it comes to a movie that you love.
The movie is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD, giving fans several different ways to own and watch it at home. If you own your own copy, the comings and goings of streaming services won't matter to you in the slightest. Ex Machina is a seminal sci-fi entry, and the official directorial debut of one of the genre's most prolific creators.
It also features some career-best work from the incredibly talented trio of Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac. It's a movie worth watching, remembering, and sharing, so hopefully the closing of the Netflix door will open a few others.
