The proportion of women at senior levels of the ASX 200 has risen slowly since 2014, but men still dominate executive positions, research from Citi found.
The proportion of women working in Australia’s 200 largest companies has increased at all levels, a new analysis ofhas found, but progress promoting women into senior positions remains slow.
Citi head of ESG research Ed McKinnon said the figures were tracking in the right direction, but the speed of the change could be improved. “It’s really important for senior male leaders to be champions as well because the statistics say they still are the majority,” Ms Wade said. “You really do need those people to lift you up and push because I didn’t see myself in that role [of CEO] … you just don’t know [if you’re being asked] for your ability or for a quota.”Ms Ashton said Ms Wade had a unique skill set but still did not think she met all the criteria for the chief executive role.
Ms Brennan recalled that, earlier in her career, her boss at Santos had backed her when she convinced the CEO to let her – not an engineer – run the $125 million program building the company’s new headquarters. The Citi research also identified that sectors with fewer women, such as mining and energy, were successful at retaining women as they progressed up the ranks.
