There was more than a hint of exhaustion in the National Weather Service forecast for San Antonio for Sunday night and Monday. It called for, well, more of the same.
This wasn't the only sign that forecasting, analyzing and explaining so much hot weather — not to mention living through it — may have gotten old for weather service personnel.
Consider how the San Antonio-Austin crew responded to news of unexpectedly chilly temperatures over the weekend in Flagstaff, located in the mountains of central Arizona. On Saturday morning, the temperature there hit 77 degrees, Flagstaff's highest reading of the month, only to drop to 23 degrees in the afternoon.
The weather service's Flagstaff meteorologists described the 54-degree swing as"humongous" and attributed it to a mass of exceptionally dry air. Guess what! Our office experienced a 54° temperature swing between this morning and afternoon! 77° happens to be the warmest temperature we have recorded this June, and 23° happens to be the lowest!! This humongous temp range occurred due to the extremely dry air in place.
