A senior government minister has been grilled over why Labor’s election promises will avoid scrutiny from a snap review into the $120 billion infrastructure pipeline as Anthony Albanese accuses the Coalition of being “obsessed with pork barrelling”.

The 90-day review will assess which of the projects have a “lasting benefit” for Australia after the number of developments blew out from 150 to 800.

“What we've been obsessed with is delivering productivity enhancing projects. And that's why we'll be working with every state and territory government. As part of the announcement, the government also recommitted to projects which have already begun construction as well as up to $55 billion worth of election commitments.

“But if you’re going to have a review shouldn’t everything be in review, but you’re saying ‘we promised them so they’re good projects’,” Jayes asked.Mr Ayres defended the review’s integrity and said: “Remember what the last government did it wasn’t about election commitments, what they did is they perverted the processes of government”.
