‘You can’t compare!’: Buzz, Tallis in heated debate amid Luai’s bold ‘best to ever do it’ claim
Veteran sports journalist Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield and NRL legend Gorden Tallis were locked in a debate as to whether this Penrith Panthers team is truly the greatest of all time.
Watch every match of The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Live on Kayo Sports. Starts THU 6 OCT 7:30PM AEDT.Penrith’s triumph made them the only team to win three in a row in the NRL era and the first since the Parramatta Eels from 1981 to 1983.“Uncharted territory, something that’s never been done before — by those two definitions we are the best team to ever do it,” Luai said.
“You could even go back to St George, 11 in a row. Langlands, Raper, Provan, Gasnier, immortals. No salary cap, a team worth three times what a lot of their opponents were worth.Rothfield also pointed out the sheer strength of Penrith’s forward pack as another reason why they must be considered ahead of the Eels team in the early 90s.
However, Tallis believed it is completely unfair to compare the teams given Penrith are competing in an era where technology in sport has never been more advanced.“It’s called sports science, you can’t compare,” Tallis said.
