Gov. Phil Murphy and top Democratic leaders in the sate Legislature announced a sales tax holiday for back to school items.

“This is giving that money back to taxpayers,” Scutari said.

This is the latest in a string of tax relief proposals from Democratic state leaders after a tense November election in which Republicans gained seven seats in the state Legislature. It also comes as Murphy and Democratic lawmakers continue negotiations on a state budget for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

“It’s a shame that they don’t make a true commitment to provide long-term tax cuts like Republicans have,” Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio said. “This is a red herring to make people think they aren’t being overtaxed when they are and continue to be with Democrats in charge.” Despite a final budget getting released at the last minute, Murphy and state leaders on Wednesday said they are “very optimistic” a budget will get done by July 1.Murphy said shoppers will not have to show an ID, and anyone will be able to take advantage of the tax holiday, which leaders say about 16 other states have already implemented.
