Key pieces worn by Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and more at the 2020 Venice Film Festival will be up for auction, with all proceeds going to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Facing History.

The auction is a collaboration between some of Hollywood’s most influential creatives. Founded by Arianne Phillips, the mastermind behind Madonna’s wardrobe and the Oscar-nominated costume designer ofwas responsible for the spate of fashion-fueled donations ahead of the 2019 Golden Globes. Their input pushed brands to begin donating money to causes connected to the celebrities they dress.
Blanchett and Stewart add a new element to each familiar look. Opening night’s sequin-covered Esteban Cortazar gown, originally worn at a London screening of Carol in 2015, received an update thanks to sleek Pomellato jewelry. “It’s an astounding dress, [Cate] fell in love with it the first time she saw it” says Stewart of the choice. “{Adding] the necklace was a nice twist, and she liked that it was a younger designer.
For their part, the forces behind the auction hope that auctions, charitable donations, and advocacy tied to the global platform of the red carpet become the norm. “We’re hoping that these purposeful red carpets will inspire other stylists and designers,” says Phillips. “This year, the pandemic has brought us closer together, and it would seem tone-deaf not to have these purposeful initiatives each time as [we are] promoting films and promoting the new collections.
