A Porsche 911 may be out of reach, but you may be able to swing a pre-owned Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or Macan.
Not all Porsches are priced equally, but the brand is one of the very few that imbues all of its products—from the least expensive SUV to the most spectacular sports car—with something special.
So if you're not making 911 money, don't fret; there may still be an attainable, delightful P-car in your driveway's future. In fact, one can be yours for $60,000 or less. We hesitate to call the Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and Macan entry-level models, as that risks discounting their greatness. There's a reason all three have been perennial 10Best winners—the mix of comfort, agility, tactility, and pure driving pleasure that each provides is unrivaled for the money.
And unlike the 911, even new variations of this trio make it under the annual base-price cap that is imposed on 10Best contenders. No, they're still not cheap, and maintenance will cost you, but excellence usually has its price, and we think this is a fair one. ➡️ Skip the lot. Let Car and Driver help you find your next car.
Shop New Cars | Shop Used Cars 2012–2016 Porsche Boxster You need only reach back one generation to access a decent deal on Porsche's roadster. The 981-generation Boxster, the one before the 718 prefix was added, still looks plenty fresh. Plus, unlike its 718 successor, this Boxster iteration came standard with six-cylinder power across the board. The Boxster made the 10Best list every year of this generation, which covers used 2013 Porsche Boxsters to used 2016 Porsche Boxsters.
Because Boxsters are usually babied and driven on select occasions, even those that fit under our $60,000 price umbrella have low mileage and look clean. As of this writing, you can even find Boxsters of this era for around $30,000. Finding one with a manual gearbox may be a bit of a challenge, though, so plan on spending a bit more to nab a 981 Boxster with three pedals.
Not every variant will be available to you at this price point . That's fine, though, because even a base Boxster is an absolute treat to drive. SHOP PORSCHE BOXSTER 2014–2016 Porsche Cayman Like its Boxster sibling, the tin-top 981-generation Cayman was named to our 10Best Cars list for the entirety of its life cycle.
Here we're talking about used 2014 Porsche Caymans to used 2016 Porsche Caymans. You might find a higher-mileage Cayman from this generation for under $30,000. Those with under 100,000 miles on the clock are certainly pricier, but can be found for at, or even well under, $60,000.
SHOP PORSCHE CAYMAN 2015–Present Porsche Macan The gas-fed version of Porsche's compact SUV has been around for just one generation, which means you'll be looking at used 2015 Porsche Macans up to the present year. Still, features, power, and performance have evolved over its 10-plus years of service. You can get a clean pre-owned Macan with fewer than 100,000 miles on the odometer right now for as little as about $14,000.
The $60,000 max doesn't limit you much, either, as you can even find low-mile certified pre-owned 2025 Macan Turbos at that price point. SHOP PORSCHE MACAN Tips and Insights Get a Pre-Purchase InspectionThe best thing you can do before purchasing a used vehicle is have a pre-purchase inspection done. It's a simple process: find and pay a local mechanic to give the vehicle you're considering a lookover to ensure there are no hidden issues.
It's a small price to pay for peace of mind. Get a Vehicle History ReportThe second-best thing you can do before purchasing a used vehicle is to get its history report. Make sure there are no mileage inconsistencies or major car accidents on the record that could jeopardize the value or safety of the vehicle. Be sure to get under any used car if possible.
You'll want to make sure there's no sign of rust setting in. Be sure to look and feel under the wheelwells, too. Top ConditionTake a good look at the condition of the top and rear window. Check for holes or separations throughout.
Be sure to lower and raise the top to confirm the mechanisms are in good working order, too. Stick to the Test DriveIf you're looking at a stick-shift-equipped model, then test to see if the clutch is in good condition. An easy way to do this is to take a test drive, bring the car to around 40 mph or so, and put the car in its top gear.
Then floor the accelerator. If the car's clutch is worn, then the engine speeds will rise at a rate that's out of sync with the vehicle's forward acceleration. What exactly does that mean? To paraphrase Justice Potter Stewart, 'You'll know it when you feel it.
'Maintenance Minded If you're looking at a used Porsche from a dealer, be sure to ask for service records on the vehicle. Not all dealers will have this information readily available, but it never hurts to ask. That said, private sellers should be able to provide this information from at least the time they took ownership.
There's a chance they don't have this documentation at hand, either; however, you'll need to trust your gut to determine if this is an honest oversight on their part or a deceptive lie aimed at keeping you from discovering something unsavory about the car.
