Dolph Lundgren, who famously starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in 1985’s Rocky IV, reveals that he is undergoing treatment for cancer.
Rocky IV star Dolph Lundgren reveals that he's been undergoing a secret battle with cancer since 2015. Released in 1985, Rocky IV pits Sylvester Stallone's Rocky against a new opponent in the form of Lundgren's Ivan Drago. Lundgren would go on to enjoy a fruitful career after his stint in the Rocky franchise, frequently appearing in action movies throughout the rest of the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s before reuniting with Stallone in The Expendables and Creed 2.
“They found a tumor in my kidney and they took it out here in LA in 2015, but then they did a biopsy and it was cancerous. And then I did scans every six months, then you do it every year and it was fine for five years. In 2020, I was back in Sweden, and I had acid reflux or something. I didn’t know what it was, so I did an MRI and they found that there were a few more tumors around that area.
"They did a scan to prepare for surgery and the surgeon called me and said, ‘It’s grown now. It’s too big. We can’t take it out.’ It’s like the size of a small lemon. If they can’t take it out that means you have to do systemic therapy. "[This new doctor in London] started saying things like, ‘You should probably take a break and spend more time with your family.’ So I asked him, ‘How long do you think I’ve got left?’ And I think he said, ‘Two or three years,’ but I could tell in his voice that he probably thought it was less. I thought that was it, for sure.
