A York man is charged for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Gerald Powell , 51, had his first court appearance Friday on the felony and misdemeanor charges.According to court documents, Powell was among a group of rioters wrestling for control of a line of bike rack barricades and police barriers.When the police line was broken, Powell was allegedly one of the first 20 rioters to move past it.
Investigators said Powell then turned back and dragged barricades to the side to expand the opening.Powell eventually entered the Capitol and walked around the perimeter of the rotunda while waving an American flag, according to court documents.Investigators said he left the building after about 10 minutes.More than 1,400 people from nearly all 50 states have been charged for crimes related to the U.S. Capitol breach.
