While Yoda is deemed one of the Jedi Order’s moral centers, his long history in service means even he may not be able to live up to his own standards.

Warning: This article contains SPOLIERS for Star Wars: Yoda #3Grand Master Yoda worked to establish a Jedi Order in Star Wars that was composed of dedicated, selfless, and morally incorruptible members, but at least in terms of the Jedi recruitment policy, morality for Yoda was only in the eyes of the beholder.

Cavin Scott and Nico Leon's new series Star Wars: Yoda takes a deep-dive exploration of the rich and complicated backstory of Yoda. In the series' third issue, the Jedi Master and long-standing leader of the Order arrives on the planet Turrak to honor a promise he made long ago to support the Scalvi people should they go to war with their mortal enemies, the Crulkon.

There are a number of arguments against Yoda's support for the Jedi recruitment policy that can plausibly be justified. For instance, the requirement that recruits refrain from maintaining relations with their former families was arguably enacted to protect them from having their emotions and attachments tempt them to the dark side. That is, it worked to eliminate one of the easiest ways for Jedi to fail.

It's interesting that Yoda would so instinctively distrust Bree's nephew's practice and see it as obviously wrong, and yet, there's no evidence of Yoda's disapproval or criticism of how the Jedi Order acts similarly to replenish its ranks. While the scale is much smaller on Turrak, the actions of Bree's nephew are done for exactly the same purpose.
