Located at Crane Cove Park, the YMCA Dogpatch is the first such new facility in SF in 30 years

San Francisco ’s first new YMCA in 30 years has brought with it access to portions of The City’s waterfront that had been “shut off … for decades.” The Dogpatch YMCA at Crane Cove Park , the YMCA of Greater San Francisco ’s 15th location within The City, commemorated its first three months of operation with a ribbon-cutting Saturday.

Located inside a former steel galvanizing warehouse just north of Pier 70, the facility is part of city officials’ broader development efforts along its eastern shoreline. Jamie Bruning-Miles, the YMCA of Greater San Francisco’s president and chief executive officer, said that “we intentionally waited to do this ribbon-cutting ceremony because we did not want to do this quietly.”The renovated, 4,073 square-foot space at 701 Illinois St. includes a weight and cardio room with waterfront views, a group exercise studio, a rest and recovery room, as well as locker rooms and publicly accessible restrooms. Its programs include water sports as part of a partnership with Dogpatch Paddle — an equipment rental company that also offers lessons and tours on the bay — as well as outdoor exercise classes.Bayfront Park, a 5.4-acre green space with views of San Francisco Bay, opened across the street from the Chase Center basketball arena last October. The park, replete with lush lawns and pedestrian plazas, was in the works for 10 years as part of a master development plan for the Mission Bay neighborhood. Just south of Mission Bay, the Potrero Power Station project will open another portion of San Francisco’s waterfront through a mix of offices, commercial spaces, community facilities and almost seven acres of open space. At nearby Pier 70, an ongoing development plan calls for 1.8 million square feet of office space and around 2,000 new homes. Elaine Forbes, the Port of San Francisco’s executive director, said the portions of San Francisco’s waterfront being developed had previously been “shut off from Dogpatch for decades.” Ex // Top Stories One more store down, two to go in San Francisco Centre A jewelry store left the ailing mall recently and two more stores will soon as the mall’s roster of retailers dwindles What SF could lose as it cuts legal aid funding Those rescued from brink say it helped keep them housed Trans org out nearly $1M after SF axes Dream Keeper grants The organization, which supports The City’s trans community, is struggling to keep its services going after two of its grants were cancelled “Turning that around and seeing a new day and having community come together to uplift children and bring in the programming and the integration with District 10 is just the best thing that can happen,” she said of the supervisorial district in which the facility resides. Bruning-Miles, the YMCA of Greater San Francisco executive, said the organization does “not build static facilities” and that the Dogpatch location “will evolve over time.” This summer, the facility will offer personal training, according to officials. A new cafe is expected to open later this year when a tenant is found, officials said. The YMCA of Greater San Francisco is expected to open a 25,000 square-foot facility at the nearby Potrero Power Station redevelopment once the project developer has identified a site, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It will serve as the organization’s flagship wellness and aquatic center, according to officials, and the plans also include a gymnasium. For now, the Dogpatch YMCA team includes one membership and wellness director, five membership and wellness associates and seven group exercise instructors. YMCA Board Chair Gina Gregory-Burns said that the organization is “committed to District 10.” “We’re bringing the best of YMCA programs here, from senior wellness to youth programs, expanding work that we’re already doing in the Bayview,” she said.“It means building communities where people have a collective sense of power and purpose to shape their community and their own lives as well,” she said. “Where people feel connected to one another and these days, importantly, don’t feel so alone.”
