Forecasters say the north coastal area could get an inch or more of rain and some inland valleys and foothills could receive more as wet pattern continues in Southern California.

A Pacific storm that appears to be stronger than the one that soaked San Diego County on Friday and Saturday will move ashore Tuesday and drop from an inch to 1.5 inches of rain from the coast to the inland valleys, adding to what’s already been a very wet year, said the National Weather Service.

The system is tapping warm moisture from the subtropics and producing an atmospheric river that’s expected to be about 100 miles wide when it passes through Southern California. Forecasters estimate that the heaviest precipitation will fall from Oceanside to Mira Mesa in the coastal region off to Julian and Mount Laguna in the east. The coastal area from San Diego south will receive less rain. It’s possible that the storm will take an angle that delivers 2.5 inches to 3 inches on Palomar Mountain. The outer bands of the system will arrive Tuesday morning but the brunt of the rain will fall on Tuesday night and last into early Wednesday.

“This is part of a wet weather pattern that looks like it will last into late next week,” said Phil Gonsalves, a weather service forecaster. San Diego International Airport averages 9.79 inches of rain from October 1 to September 30. Since last October, it has recorded 10.74 inches, making this the wettest season in three years. By comparison, Seattle averages close to 40 inches of rain per year.
