Texas state parks are known for their hiking trails, swimming holes, campgrounds and other amenities that families have flocked to for generations. But every fall and winter, they’re also a destination for another outdoor activity: hunting.
Hill Country may reap benefits as Texas grows state parks system “Hunting in state parks is extremely important from a wildlife management perspective,” he said. With fewer large predators — such as bears and mountain lions — roaming through Texas, the numbers of other species can get out of balance, threatening those animals themselves and their environment, he said.
The deer in New Braunfels are ubiquitous. The city is considering killing them. The animals can also have a significant impact on the environment, officials say, eating up all of their preferred vegetation and removing those plants from the habitat. As deer eat the woody plants as high as they can reach, they can eliminate the understory — the vegetation between the ground and the tree canopy that’s critical habitat for songbirds.

At a youth hunt in November at Hill Country State Natural Area in Bandera County, 15 young hunters harvested seven deer and one feral hog, he said. The season runs from Sept. 1 to Jan.
