Rural youth need access to digital technology and skills training | SA's problem is that young people in rural areas face the real risk of being left behind due to the lack of access to the fourth industrial revolution, says Yershen Pillay. Do you agree?
Young people in South Africa should be capacitated with digital skills to ‘future proof’ their career aspirations.The combined impact of digital technology trends, such as the internet of things, big data, robotics and AI, is changing the way in which people, economies and societies operate.
Government entities, private sector companies and development institutions increasingly rely on digital technologies to drive economic growth, promote social development and provide cultural enrichment. Legacy skills, and even existing ICT skills, are becoming obsolete, while new digital skills are in short supply.
The department of higher education, science and innovation has urged the various stakeholders in the sector to collaborate and find ways to ensure that young South Africans are capacitated with the digital skills to"future proof" their career aspirations. Youth Month is a time when we celebrate the country’s young people and these centres, among other objectives, serve to remind young people living in rural communities that they have an important contribution to make to the future of this country.
Budding entrepreneurs and SMMEs specifically will benefit from the skills development opportunities and communication technology available at the centres. The goal is to provide a minimum of 2 000 SMMEs by 2025 with some kind of service or support to build job-creating, sustainable enterprises in the long run.
