Yellowstone Switching Main Characters 3 Times In 2 Years Reveals The Truth About Kevin Costner's John Dutton
United States Latest News, United States Headlines

Yellowstone's John Dutton secret, explained.

The realization that Yellowstone changed its main character not once, not twice, but thrice should clue viewers into the fact that Kevin Costner’s star power was never the deciding factor in the show’s success.

Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire seems almost unstoppable in 2026. While Sheridan first rose to prominence with the movies Hell or High Water and Wind River, it was 2018’s Neo-Western series Yellowstone that made him one of the most prominent creators in the modern TV landscape.

Between Sheridan’s spy series Special Ops: Lioness, Tulsa King and its upcoming spinoff Frisco King, the urban crime drama Mayor of Kingstown, the traditional historical Western Lawman: Bass Reeves, The Madison, and Landman, it is fair to say that Sheridan has moved beyond the franchise in the years since its debut. However, thanks to spinoffs like the recently renewed Dutton Ranch, Yellowstone remains Sheridan’s most famous and profitable intellectual property.

Yellowstone first expanded its scope with two prequel shows, 1883 and 1923. After these shows proved huge hits before Yellowstone’s original run even ended in 2024, the show spawned a pair of sequel shows, Marshals and Dutton Ranch.

The former followed John Dutton’s son Kayce as he joined the US Marshals to protect his home state of Montana, while the latter saw Beth and Rip relocate to the titular Dutton Ranch after Kayce’s sale of the sprawling Yellowstone ranch to the Reservation in the original show’s series finale. John Dutton Was Never The True Main Character Of Yellowstone One thing that both of these sequel shows have in common is their focus on the Dutton family’s surviving children, with Wes Bentley’s villainous third sibling Jamie being killed off late in season 5.

Eagle-eyed readers will note that Yellowstone’s original antihero, John Dutton, isn’t present in either show, since he was killed in a hit set up by Jamie during the second half of season 5. While Costner’s early exit from the show was controversial at the time, time has been kind to the decision.

Much like the Yellowstone franchise became more of a gangster series than a Neo-Western as the show continued past season 3's finale, the show also outgrew its initial focus on Costner’s Dutton patriarch in its final seasons. When Jamie indirectly killed his father, this set in motion Beth’s murder of her brother, making her the show’s primary focus in its final outings.

Of course, Kayce inherited the ranch after the deaths of John and Jamie, meaning he was then turned into the show’s new protagonist by its series finale. Yellowstone Is Thriving After John Dutton's Exit The Yellowstone franchise dealt with this split focus by following Kayce’s story in Marshals and Beth’s story in Dutton Ranch, ensuring both characters received the story focus they deserved after years of being overshadowed by their famous father.

John Dutton had plenty of fans, but the Yellowstone franchise had expanded beyond his original story well before season 5. Thus, his death was a clever way to signal to viewers that, far from wrapping up the show’s run, John’s demise was just the beginning for this ambitious franchise.

Where acclaimed character studies like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad focused on specific antiheroes throughout their runs, Yellowstone was always more of a trashy Western soap like Dallas or Dynasty, and the show switched up its main characters accordingly. Thus, while the series was never daring enough to kill off its biggest star early on, something HBO's Game of Thrones managed with Sean Bean, Yellowstone was savvy enough to ensure that John was gone long before the series finale.

This meant that viewers who wished the Yellowstone franchise story would continue by focusing on Kayce got a spinoff of their own, while fans who instead wanted more from Beth and Rip got a separate series that aired shortly after. 527 8.9/10 7/10 Yellowstone 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Western Drama Release Date 2018 - 2024 Network Paramount Network Showrunner Taylor Sheridan Directors Stephen Kay, Taylor Sheridan, Christina Alexandra Voros, Guy Ferland, John Dahl Writers John Coveny, Ian McCulloch Cast See All Franchise Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan, John Linson Powered by Expand Collapse
