A Look at Stories That Shook Nigeria's North in 2022From a daring terror attack on a moving train to the commencement of oil drilling - 2022 will be remembered in Northern Nigeria for some key events and developments. Premium Times lists some of the stories from the region that stood out. Gunmen carrying explosives, blew up the tracks on March 28, 2022 - attacking a train travelling between Abuja and Kaduna. Eight passengers were shot and killed, 26 were wounded and an unspecified number of passengers were taken hostage. In May 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission announced the arrest of Nigeria's accountant-general, Ahmed Idris, on suspicion that he diverted almost U.S.$200 million of public funds. Abba Kyari, former deputy commissioner of police was implicated in a case of money laundering, fraud, and other crimes involving a Nigerian social media influencer Ramon Abbas, alias Hushpuppi. Hushpuppi pleaded guilty in California to money laundering and also claimed he had paid a bribe to Kyari to arrest a syndicate member with whom he had fallen out. The U.S. authorities then declared Kyari wanted and sought his extradition to stand trial. Like many other parts of the country, Northern Nigeria experienced devastating floods that wreaked havoc on farmlands, roads, houses, and schools. From Kogi and Bauchi to Yobe, Jigawa, Kano and Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, and Sokoto in the three zones of the region, it was stories of the loss of life, farm produce, and property.
