“I ain’t coming to play with y’all!” This was GloRilla's attitude as she got ready for the 2024 MTV VMAs, and the sentiment was confirmed the moment she hit carpet. The Memphis-born rapper arrived at the UBS Arena outside of New York City in a reflective cropped jacket and matching oversized pants—a strip of fabric strategically wrapped around her chest. Her inspiration for the night was the look and hairstyle the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes wore to the 2000 Soul Train Awards.
Hairstylist and wig maker Tokyo Stylez was tasked with recreating Lopes's famous hairstyle—marked by multiple three-plait braids morphing into rings, and heavy bangs. As she prepped in her hotel room, GloRilla listened to music, scrolled TikTok, and enjoyed a pre-VMAs meal. “I’ve been working out a lot, so today I had a meal prep from my trainer Rob ,” she says.
