“He never came in before,” Burnett said “It was kind of like, ‘Oh, sh-t.’ Like, I’ve never been on a team where we’ve had a general manager come in before that. Spring training hello’s, but not middle of the season. He was like ‘Y’all need to f—ing clean it up. Look around your locker room, look at what we have here. Look at what we put together. Y’all need to f—ing play better.’
“He was very stern, you could tell he cared. I’m pretty sure he flew in that day for it, I don’t think he was in Atlanta at the time. I think he flew in to come chew our asses out. And it worked.” At the start of the series that began June 23, the Yankees were 38-32. They lost the first game and then went on a seven-game winning streak ... eventually winning the World Series.“Good question,” Burnett answered. “... I don’t know if he did or not. That’s a good question. I do know he’s getting crazy heat for having one losing season out of 30, which is pretty good in my opinion. But who knows.
