The New York Yankees reliever has opted out of his minor league contract.
Feinsand reported the news Sunday afternoon. The Yankees get 72 hours to add Bowman to the club’s 40-man roster or he becomes a free agent.With Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year, the reliever is 4-0 with a 3.29 ERA and three saves across 30 appearances.
The Yankees signed Bowman to a one-year minor-league deal this offseason. The 32-year-old had been on their payroll the last two seasons without getting any production because his recovery from September 2020 Tommy John surgery took a year longer than expected. Across four big-league seasons he’s posted a 4.02 ERA over 183 appearances with 149 strikeouts and 62 walks in 181 1/3 innings.Bowman is a Chevy Chase, Md., native with to New York and New Jersey, as the 6-foot, 185 pounder played his college ball at Princeton and began his pro career as afarmhand after they drafted him in the 13th round in 2013.
Bowman slumped to a career-worse 6.26 ERA over 22 outings in 2018, then after the season was claimed off waivers by the Reds and rebounded in 2019 going 2-0 with a 3.66 ERA in 27 outings for Cincinnati.
