The Yankees acquired three players — Jazz Chisholm Jr., Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos — before Tuesday's trade deadline.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the prices attached to trade pieces at the deadline this year were "astronomical."’ general manager for more than two decades. He said Wednesday that he’s never experienced a trade deadline environment quite like this season.
“We kicked around all possibilities of ways to improve the club,” Cashman said. “Our imports are what we have to show for that. We either hit hurdles that prevented , we didn’t match up in some cases or we were unwilling to pay the price in other cases.”Between what the Yankees already have, what they acquired within the last few days and who they have working back from the injured list, Cashman is comfortable with the roster the Yankees are working with the rest of the way.
The one area of need that wasn’t addressed was the starting rotation. The Yankees were close to acquiring Jack Flaherty from the Tigers, in on the right-hander until the very end. A report fromcirculated after the deadline on Tuesday that the Yankees backed out of an agreement because of medical concerns. Cashman didn’t deny that an injury played a role in those trade talks.
Chisholm Jr. has already exceeded expectations in his willingness to do whatever it takes to help the team win, like moving to third base for the first time. Having two more years of control with the player beyond this year are a bonus as the Yankees were focused on improving their roster for the 2024 season.
