The New York Yankees designated a former left-handed relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers while signing a right-handed reliever.

309 with 18 home runs and 56 RBIs.Two less-heralded acquisitions of the Yankees' offseason came into sharp focus Friday.Four days after the Soto trade became official, the Dodgers traded left-handed relief pitcher Victor González and second baseman Jorbit Vivas to the Yankees for shortstop Trey Sweeney. Coincidentally, in February, the Dodgers traded another left-handed reliever — Caleb Ferguson — to the Yankees for two minor leaguers.Then in April the Yankees signed a third ex-Dodgers reliever, Phil Bickford, to a minor league contract. None of the moves were earth-shattering on the level of an All-Star slugger, but it made for an interesting coincidence.So did Friday's series of transactions.In a swap of one ex-Dodgers reliever for another, the Yankees designated González for assignment and purchased the contract of Bickford from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.González, 28, had pitched well. Left-handed batters were hitting just .143 against him; righties were hitting just .170. Overall he was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 27 relief appearances.Bickford, 28, had pitched well at Triple-A, going 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. He had largely eliminated the walk issues that plagued him during the 2023 regular season, which he split between the Dodgers and New York Mets.The swap leaves Ferguson and newly acquired veteran Tim Hill as the only lefties in the Yankees' bullpen for their weekend series against the Atlanta Braves.Read more: Yankees Fill Need, Sign Veteran Free Agent PitcherIn addition to bringing Bickford back to the majors for the first time since last September, the Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gomez from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.The Venezuelan right-hander had appeared in one game for the Yankees each of the last two seasons without allowing a run. At Triple-A, Gomez was 2-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 12 starts across 46 innings.Teams routinely swap out relief pitchers in order to keep their best players fresh throughout the regular season, particularly before taking on a new opponent. But to cut ties with González, for whom the Yankees gave up on a legitimate prospect only six months earlier, is unusual.The Yankees now have seven days to trade González, or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.
