Three days after Ian Hamilton returned to the injured list, another Yankees reliever has been sidelined with an injury.
Taking Middleton’s place on the active roster is left-hander Matt Krook. Krook has had a breakout season as a reliever in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre — posting a 0.98 ERA over 23 outings — but he’s yet to find those same results with the Yankees. In his first two appearances with the big-league club earlier this summer, Krook gave up seven earned runs in three frames.
Middleton is eligible to return from his injury in just under two weeks, but depending on the severity of the injury , the Yankees may shut the righty down. The 29-year-old is a free agent this winter. Krook joins rookies Greg Weissert, Jhony Brito and Randy Vásquez, young arms with a chance to finish this season on a high note. He also settles in with a bullpen that’s been dealing of late. Yankees relievers haven’t allowed a run in their last 16 innings over their last four games. They haven’t given up an earned run in their last 24 innings, dating back to Aug. 30.
