GM Brian Cashman strongly hinted that major changes are coming for the Yankees this off-season.
Overall, I’d give Cashman a B-plus for his candor and open-mindedness. That was all necessary but what comes next is more critical. We’ll see how far Cashman is willing to let the pendulum swing in the opposite direction in order to fix the Yankees.
For one, it’s in jeopardy of actually being wrong. The 61-64 Yankees could easily finish under .500. Or in last place. Or both. “Doesn’t anyone care that the Yankees were better than the Braves for most of the last 25 years?” Beane asked.Beane doubled down in his defense of Cashman, pointing out baseball is a cyclical industry, “and the Yankees are the one team that hasn’t had a down cycle in a quarter century,” he said. “That’s pretty remarkable. ", everything else feels broken. Cashman himself is in a deep slump, unable to pull off the prescient trade of the past or find the hidden gems on the free agent market.
