Yankees' Derek Jeter served as CEO of the Marlins from 2017-2022

FILE - Miami Marlins designated Avisail Garcia for assignment, choosing to eat the remaining $24 million left on his deal. Under Jeter, the Marlins signed outfielder Avisaíl García to a four-year, $53 million deal in 2022. Three seasons later, in 153 games, García is batting .218 with a .582 OPS, leading to the team designating him for assignment. Miami will have to eat the remainder of his contract, $24.

The following season, he managed to play in just 37 games and couldn’t crack a .200 batting average — he batted .185 with a .556 OPS. This season, after landing on the IL again on April 28th with a left hamstring strain and then recently going 2-for-19 during a five-game injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville, Miami felt they had seen enough.
