The Yankees hit three Rays batters during Sunday's 7-4 loss at Tropicana Field.
The second of four Rays’ hit on the afternoon was scary, and fortunately Paredes wasn’t hurt, but it was a continuation of a lot of hit batters between the AL East rivals this season. The Rays have been on the receiving end for all but two.Hamilton hit Jonathan Aranda in the sixth to set up a four-run Rays rally, then Randy Arozarena was hit in the eighth by Albert Abreu.
Both starting pitchers also hit batters Sunday, as Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon hit Osleivis Basabe in the first inning and Rays righty Zack Littell drilled Oswald Peraza in the fourth.“If they want to come over here, they can come over here,” Hamilton said. “I wish we had another game against them. I think everyone in here wished we had another game against them.The Rays didn’t want to fight, but they did take a verbal shot at the Yankees.
“They’ve had a few guys hit this series, so I get it,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Especially, Diaz being out right now, I get the frustration. But nothing is happening on purpose. Obviously, some tempers got going.” “That doesn’t make it less scary though. So to say I had a problem I just would rather my guys not get hit.”“I definitely wasn’t trying to hit him in the head,” he said. “I was trying to go in with a two-seam. It just kind of ran a little more. When he was going up the line, I said, ‘My fault.’ That was my fault for starting that, but that’s what it is.”
“I’m definitely not trying to hit him. I’m just trying to execute my pitch and get some soft contact there.”
