Giancarlo Stanton played a key role in the Yankees' 5-3 win over Texas on Sunday. But he said that doesn't erase weeks of struggle.
The focus on Stanton has been even more intense, if only because he so closely resembles Judge in physique and mechanics. The two are built like circus strong men, both capable of hitting 400-foot home runs with a barely of the wrists. Both are highly respected in the clubhouse. But that’s where the similarity ends.
I asked specifically about the epithets and insults from the stands during the recent drought – especially the strikeouts, which seem to trigger the ticket buyers more than anything else.“Booing is the least of my worries,” Stanton said. “I have more things to care about than that. And once I take care of that, then everything else will resolve itself.”
“Good to see,” the manager said before adding, “hopefully we build on that. Obviously we know when he gets going how much of a problem he is for the opposition.”A ringing endorsement from the manager – and even from the fans, suddenly on Stanton’s side, too – should’ve been enough to cheer him up. But Stanton’s stoicism doesn’t allow for spikes in emotion.
