The New York Yankees certainly got some good news on Thursday involving one of its biggest stars. Things are looking up.
New York has been without the services of superstar pitcher Gerrit Cole for the entire season to this point but it sounds like he is making progress in his recovery. Cole took the mound for live batting practice on Thursday and tossed 43 pitches and everything went well.
Cole isn't returning tomorrow, but if everything continues to trend in the direction it's going, a rehab assignment could be coming in the near future, "On Thursday, Cole threw 43 pitches in his third live batting practice session in Tampa," Hascup said. "He told reporter John Brophy that he felt 'good' and he was able to throw all his pitches without issue. The next step could be a big one — a rehab start with one of the Yankees’ minor-league affiliates.
“I’ll have to double-check, but it seems like the direction it’s going,” Cole said from the Yankees’ player development complex as transcribed by Hascup. Cole is scheduled to throw at some point in the 'middle of next week,' he said, as long as recovery goes well. In March, he was shut down after that did not happen satisfactorily. He completed Thursday’s session with three-ups to simulate what he’d do in a real game.
Cole should give the Yankees a significant boost and it sounds like he isn't too far away from game action.Patrick McAvoy's experiences include local and national sports coverage at the New England Sports Network with a focus on basketball and baseball.
