The New York Yankees are reportedly interested in signing free agent second baseman Brendan Rodgers to a bargain deal. With a focus on budget-conscious moves, the Yankees are unlikely to pursue expensive options like Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado. Rodgers, a former top prospect, offers a potential solution at second base, allowing the team to keep Jazz Chisholm at third base and avoid relying on DJ LeMahieu.
Before spring training starts in the second week of February, the Yankees would like to add an infielder with pedigree. With the Yankees now seemingly in a bargain-hunting mode and unlikely to change unless they find a taker for expensive extra starter Marcus Stroman, they almost certainly won’t be signing free agent Alex Bregman or trading for Nolan Arenado to play third base.
A more realistic option is adding a cheaper second baseman to replace Torres, keep Jazz Chisholm at third base and prevent the Yankees from having to count on DJ LeMahieu, who will make $15 million for two more seasons after mostly struggling or being injured since winning his second batting title in 2020. According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY, the Yankees have had talks with free agent second baseman Brendan Rodgers, who was a surprise non-tender last November after six seasons with the Rockies.This guy won a Gold Glove in 2022 and his hitting last season wasn’t too shabby, .267 average with 29 doubles, 13 homers, 54 RBI and a .721 OPS in 135 games. Also on his resume is a .284 average with 15 homers and a .798 OPS in 2015 and a career 266 batting average. Rodgers also still is a young man at 28, and a change of scenery perhaps could bring out more from a former hotshot prospect who was picked third overall in the 2015 draft after the Braves took shortstop Dansby Swanson and the Astros drafted Bregman. Best of all, Rodgers might be very affordable, as MLB Pipeline projected he’d get a $5.5-million contract for 2025 before his non-tender.Rodgers is a career .306 hitter playing a mile above sea level at Coors Field in Denver and a .227 hitter everywhere else.Rodgers appears better suited to be a platoon player because he’s hit .311 against left-handed pitching and .252 against righties for his career.Rodgers’ Baseball Savant defensive metrics last season were poor, as his minus-2 Outs About Average ranked 28th among 37 qualifying second baseme
