The Yankees were one of several MLB teams scouting Orix Buffaloes right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Japan this weekend.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone smiled on Sunday morning when asked about the Japanese ace, acknowledging that the Yankees are interested in the soon-to-be free agent. For the Yankees to send Cashman and others all the way to Japan to watch the right-hander pitch, they must be.
“I heard he’s really good,” Boone said. “I think he’s won a couple of whatever their Cy Young is over there, so I know he’s a decorated guy that I think gets posted maybe this winter. So I know he’s on a lot of people’s radar and having another great year. I think they saw a no-hitter the other day. So yeah, I know they’re watching potentially another really good Japanese player possibly heading to the Major League Baseball.
Yamamoto won’t be cheap, especially with the amount of teams that are keeping a close eye on him. According toThe Yankees will need to decide if they want to make a splash on the pitching market and go all-in for Yamamoto.
