President Putin said that China’s plan could be the basis for a peace settlement but complained that Ukraine’s allies were not interested.The Russian leader criticised the UK over plans to supply Ukraine with ammunition containing depleted uranium , warning: “If that happens, Russia will respond accordingly, given that the collective West is starting to use weapons with a nuclear component.”The two leaders signed a joint statement proclaiming that relations between the powers were at the “highest point in history”, warned there would be “no winners in a nuclear war”, and accused the US of “undermining global strategic stability”.
The leaders also emphasised their economic partnership. Russia wants Chinese businesses to replace western companies that left the country after the invasion of Ukraine, said Mr Putin. Russia would also increase exports of gas to its ally, he added.
