Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts, who won the Bronco Nagurski Award as the nation's best defensive player in 2023, delivered another stellar season in 2024. Despite amassing impressive stats, including 5 interceptions and a 30.3 passer rating against, Watts was overlooked for the first team All-American honors by the Football Writers Association of America. The snub raises questions about the selection criteria, as Watts' performance arguably outshines that of Caleb Downs and Malaki Starks, who were chosen for the first team.
Xavier Watts burst onto the scene defensively in 2023, bringing home the Bronco Nagurski Award as the nation's best defensive player.
What happened was that Watts followed up his massive showing in 2023 with an even better year in 2024, even if his interceptions totals dropped from seven to five. As for Starks, Greg Flammang of Irish Sports Daily broke down the numbers in comparison to Watts and its safe to say this was a big swing and a miss by the voters.Xavier Watts, 2nd team: 15/28 against, 156 yards allowed, 5.6 ypa, 0 touchdowns allowed, 5 INTs, 9 PBU, 30.3 passer rating against
