Xander Schauffele has scored his first major championship victory by beating out Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to win the PGA Championship
Eyes may have been on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, but Xander Schauffele has come out as the star of the 2024 PGA Championship.
The San Diego native started the round tied for co-lead with two-time major winner Collin Morikawa before defeating fierce competitors Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland. McIlroy, 35, also attracted attention during the tournament after filing for divorce from wife Erica Stoll on Monday, May 13, days before the tournament commenced. He closed out his efforts in the PGA Championship with 67.
“At about 5:07 this morning, in front of Gate 2 at Valhalla Golf Club, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a shuttle bus. LMPD expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the individual who died as a result of that collision. All lanes of traffic at the scene were closed while the fatality investigation occurred,” LMPD said in a statement to Us on May 17. “LMPD personnel were also directing traffic around the scene.
