The 30-year-old Californian is looking for his first major title but now owns two of the four 62s shot in majors.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Xander Schauffele is arguably the best player in golf without a major title. He took the first step toward losing that label Thursday in record fashion.

On a comfortable day for scoring, with little wind and receptive greens, Schauffele made nine birdies, converting putts of 2 feet, 13 feet, 16 feet, 7 feet, 5 feet, 4 feet, 4 inches , 10 feet and 2 feet . He began his round on the 10th hole and went out in 31.Schauffele has 12 top-10s in majors without a win, trailing only Rickie Fowler in this year’s field. Only one of those was in a PGA Championship, a T10 in 2020 at TPC Harding Park.

The 30-year-old Californian has had an incredibly consistent 2024 on the PGA Tour, only to be overshadowed by the dominance of Scottie Scheffler. Schauffele hasn’t missed a cut in 12 starts, with five top-5 finishes, eight top 10s and only one finish outside the top 25.
