Channing Tatum as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine
The X-Men franchise just confirmed a tough truth about Gambit, as the beloved hero speaks about his struggle with addiction. Now that he's named his affliction, Remy LaBeau can start to convert it into a strength.
Let's unpack this milestone moment for Gambit, and what lies ahead for the hero. Uncanny X-Men #25 is written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez and Luciano Vecchio. As the series wraps up its"Where Monsters Dwell" arc, Gambit opens up about the demon within. As difficult as it is for him, Gambit confronts the truth of his"addict's brain," signaling a major turning point for the mutant icon. In The Middle Of Fighting Monsters, Gambit Opens Up About His Internal Battle With Addiction Uncanny X-Men #25, Written By Gail Simone; Art By David Marquez & Luciano Vecchio; Available Now From Marvel Comics Gambit stole the Eye of Agamotto from the dragon Sadurang back in Uncanny X-Men #1. He's been the keeper of the powerful Marvel artifact ever since, and Uncanny X-Men #25 doubles down on what a burden that is for the hero. Yet the issue also makes the case that Gambit is the perfect person to hold the Eye because of his past. "I been an addict," Gambit tells Sadurang, when the dragon returns in Uncanny X-Men #25 seeking the Eye."Smokes. Booze. Worse....Had an addict's brain, you understand?" In his narration, Gambit admits this is"hard to admit to anyone else," especially his wife, Rogue. Which is why he finds himself opening up to a dragon. This is a big step for Gambit as a character. In his 36 years as an X-Men mainstay, Gambit has gone through some dark times. Identifying the character as an addict adds another dimension to his past, and it also redefines him for the future. In the short-term, it sets up the next chapter of his Uncanny X-Men arc. Vocalizing His Addiction Struggles Is A Major Heroic Move For Gambit A Milestone For The Iconic Marvel Mutant In Uncanny X-Men #5, Gambit makes a deal with Sadurang:"don't eat no one for, say, a year," and the dragon can have the Eye of Agamotto back. When Sadurang questions if Gambit can give up the Eye after another year of"wielding its power," the hero admits his battle with addiction. The allure of power is just another drug, Gambit essentially tells Sadurang. It's a classic trope: the person who wants the power the least is its most responsible wielder. And for Gambit, it was living with"an addict's brain" and overcoming his impulse toward self-destruction that forged him into the hero capable of safeguarding the Eye. Gambit's Fight Against His Worst Impulses Will Stay In The Spotlight As "Uncanny X-Men" Continues The Eye Of Agamotto Is Gambit's To Keep...For Now Uncanny X-Men #25 is a chaotic, action-packed issue. In the midst of the X-Men's battle against a gang of brainwashed Marvel monsters, Gambit's confrontation with Sadurang has the most weight. It's a pivotal step forward in Gambit's character arc, which Gail Simone has been steadily building to since she started her Uncanny run. "You're goin' to test me, I know, little left eye," Gambit narrates in the issue's closing panels, before resolving:"But dis time, Gambit's gonna win." It's a tacit admission that Gambit has lost to addiction before, but that now he's stronger. And for Uncanny X-Men, it sets up Gambit's arc through the remainder of Simone's run, and perhaps beyond. Posts 18 By Shaun Corley Gaining the Eye of Agamotto was a big upgrade for Gambit. He won't have it forever, assuming his deal with Sadurang holds, but it has now officially allowed the hero to be elevated in another way, ranking him among Marvel's foremost heroes dealing with addiction. It's a significant moment for this A-list X-Men hero, and the highlight of his Uncanny arc so far.
