'Dark Phoenix' is both a disposable installment of a soon-to-be-rebooted property and the 1st chance for Disney to prove that they can sell a big Fox movie
Today is May 7, which means we are one month out from the domestic debut for. Fox marked the occasion with a new TV spot, which is nothing inordinately special but gets the job done. The reception, for good or ill, of Simon Kinberg’s would-be finale to Fox’sfranchise is one of the big question marks of the summer. And since Fox is now owned by Disney, its eventual commercial reception is something of a conundrum for the Mouse House.
As I’ve said a few times, it makes sense that Disney would prefer that this second cinematic adaptation of the “Dark Phoenix Saga” not necessarily debut to rave reviews and scorching box office. While studios generally prefer that their movies make “more money” as opposed to “less money,” the notion of Kevin Feige rebooting the X-Men property and inserting it into the MCU complicates matters.
