Just how long will X-Men '97 run for? Series director and producer Larry Houston has addressed the fate of a possible season 5 for the animated revival, unpacking how long the show could run for.
X-Men '97 season 2 is currently airing, continuing the story far beyond the original X-Men: The Animated Series in the process. The revival has already proven itself popular amongst Disney+ subscribers, so much so that it's already renewed for seasons 3 and 4. It's expected to have yearly releases going forward, too, meaning there's plenty more X-Men adventures to come.
Speaking with The Direct, however, Houston spoke about just how long the series could really last, addressing the possibility of season 5 and beyond. The producer explained how having a total of five to six seasons feels right for the show, citing fewer episodes per season in contrast to what X-Men: The Animated Series had.
However, getting five or more seasons would allow for more room in terms of character growth and more methodically paced storytelling, which could prove to be to the benefit of the series. Check out what Houston had to say below: I would say, if they can at least match what I did , five seasons, it would be great. Maybe six. But everything depends on the audience and how well-received the stories that they’re doing are.
With my original series, we had 13 episodes per season. Streaming is only like eight or nine, so their storytelling is more compressed than ours. We could stretch things out and let characterizations of situations breathe more than the streaming, it’s just more smaller. So if X-Men ’97 could do something like at least match what we did for five seasons, that would allow a lot more stories to be explored.
Because there’s been 24, 25 more years of other stories that I never touched, that this current X-Men ’97 production is exploring. X-Men '97 season 2 reviews have been extremely positive, with the new batch of episodes scoring a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 reviews. As of writing, the first five episodes have been released, with the final four arriving weekly Wednesdays on Disney+.
The praise for everything from X-Men '97's Easter eggs, to its compelling story and characters have morphed it into a staple amid Marvel's ever-expanding TV show palate. It also emphasizes how the series has managed to get renewed for two additional seasons so quickly. As of writing, season 3 is currently in production, while scripts for season 4 are in the works.
It seems the series has a long-term plan to continue its story beyond these points, however, with talks of season 5 already reportedly in the works. However, nothing has been greenlit by Disney as of writing, meaning the show's current stopping point will be in 2028 with season 4. That doesn't mean there won't be any more, though, considering Houston's long-term plans for the series.
There are less episodes per season in X-Men '97 than there are in X-Men: The Animated Series. While the original show ranged between 10 and 21 episodes per season , the revival had 10 episodes in season 1, and will have 9 episodes in season 2.
However, the episodes are much longer, ranging between 30 and 43 minutes, as opposed to the 22 minutes of the original show. This gives the show more time to flesh out its characters already, something additional seasons can further bolster. As X-Men '97 season 2 continues to play out, with Apocalypse as the core villain, the show promises to keep developing in a compelling direction for years to come.
