Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, will pay $10 million to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump. Trump sued after being removed from the platform following his role in the January 6th Capitol riots. This comes after Meta, Facebook's parent company, agreed to pay $25 million to settle a similar suit by Trump.
Elon Musk speaks during an event with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House, Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, in Washington. Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, will pay $10 million to Trump to settle the suit he brought after he was removed from the platform for his role in the Capitol Riots on Jan. 6., Trump considered dropping the case due to his close relationship with the world’s richest man.
People said terms of Meta’s agreement included $22 million going to the nonprofit that will become Trump’s future presidential library, according to The Associated Press. The balance will go to legal fees and other litigants, they said. But Trump and some other politicians have long argued that X, Facebook and other social media platforms have abused that protection and should lose their immunity — or at least have it curtailed.
The network also agreed to pay $1 million in legal fees to the law firm of Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito.
