Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny) posing together in a scene from The X-Files

Ryan Coogler reveals the first details for his reboot of The X-Files. Reports of an X-Files reboot date back to March 2023, when franchise creator Chris Carter revealed that Coogler would be spearheading a reboot of the iconic 1990s sci-fi series.

Carter clarified that he isn't involved with the new series himself, but he is supportive of it. The reboot has received a lot of attention because of the massive acclaim that Creed has received for directing films such as Black Panther and Creed. That acclaim has only increased this past year after Creed reunited with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan for the vampire movie Sinners, which has shattered box office records and garnered Oscar buzz. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler was asked about the status of the reboot. Although he declined to comment on whether David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would reprise their respective roles as Mulder and Scully, Coogler did note that the reboot would follow the original in terms of being both episodic and focused on a larger arc. Read his quote below: I mean, it wouldn't be X-Files if we didn't do both. We intend on having both Monsters of the Week and the overarching conspiracy. But that's what I'm doing now. In interviews, Anderson and Duchovny have been non-committal regarding the question of whether they plan to come back for the new show, but haven't completely ruled out the possibility. Coogler kept a lid on the subject as well, when asked about his conversations with Anderson, though he praised both actors: “I'm a big fan of her. I'm a big fan of David. You know what I mean? That's all I could say.” The director of Sinners spoke more broadly about the influence of The X-Files and how he watched the show with his mother. He also points out how the dynamic between Anderson and Duchovny on-screen helped in establishing the skeptic-believer template seen everywhere later, including the much-heralded True Detective season 1. Coogler likewise touches on how Breaking Bad and Pluribus creator Vince Gilligan started out as a writer on The X-Files: Man, I love it, bro. For me, that show is what I used to watch with my mom, bro. It's one of the most beautiful American television shows I've ever made. I think it's the story of Chris Carter. I'll tell you, he was trying to make Kojack, The Night stalker. You know what I'm saying? It's like when you, as an artist, when you're trying to capture something that you were influenced by, and you make something totally new. Anytime you watch a TV show, a movie where there's a skeptic paired with a believer and they're trying to solve a case, something like True Detective season 1, for instance. You know what I'm saying? It shows up so many times. And then, yeah, bro, that's the show that gave us Vince Gilligan, bro. You know what I'm saying? Coogler has confirmed that he is working on the reboot now and will move on to Black Panther 3 after. That could mean that fans can expect official casting news and more concrete story details in the next year. There has yet to be any confirmation or press release about the new series outside of these occasional updates from Coogler himself, which suggests that the project is still very much germinating. 103 8.9/10 8/10 The X-Files 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Mystery Crime Drama Science Fiction Release Date 1993 - 2018-00-00 Network FOX Showrunner Chris Carter Directors Rob Bowman, David Nutter, R.
