X, formerly known as Twitter, is expanding its safety and elections teams and updating its political advertising policies in preparation for the 2024 elections.
The Elon Musk-owned X announced on Tuesday that it was making preparations for the elections, including allowing more paid political advertisements on the platform, combating misinformation about the election process, and hiring more people to combat political misinformation.X's safety and election teams will focus on"combating manipulation, surfacing inauthentic accounts, and closely monitoring the platform for emerging threats," it said.
The social media platform will continue to enforce its civic integrity policy, which restricts users from suppressing participation in elections or misleading on how to vote. Users who violate these rules will have their content limited and be informed of the restrictions. This contrasts with previous elections, in which X would delete the content and restrict the accounts.
The platform will also restrict the"promotion of false or misleading content, including false or misleading information intended to undermine public confidence in an election, while seeking to preserve free and open political discourse," X said. The social media platform will allow paid political ads but provide a global advertising transparency center so everyone can review what political ads are being promoted on X.
X restricted political bans in 2019 when then-CEO Jack Dorsey stated that political ads should be"earned, not bought."The adoption of an election misinformation team contrasts with the positions staked out by Musk, who has often been critical of those claiming to combat misinformation. Musk sued one misinformation group in July over claims that it had used X's data to defame the company.
However, X has had to make compromises in the past. This summer, X partnered with Integral Ad Science, an ad-verification company that has connections to a government-funded group blacklisting conservative media outlets.
