Spring training isn’t over yet, but Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy announced Friday that Wyatt Langford will be named to the opening day roster.
After being drafted fourth overall out of Florida last July, Langford has run all the way through the Rangers’ farm system.
Texas Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford photographed at the team's training facility on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, in Surprise, Ariz.SURPRISE, Ariz. - All along this had been the plan. The Texas Rangers hoped they would be able to tell Wyatt Langford he’d made the opening day roster. All Langford, the clubs’s first round pick in the 2024 draft, has done all spring is confirm what the Rangers knew. He’s ready to hit big league pitching.
Next mystery: Where will he hit in the lineup? He’s batting third in Friday’s exhibition. It will be his 14th start in the No. 3 spot this spring. He’s batted second once and fourth three times. Of course, given how long it took Bochy to acknowledge Langford would make the opening day roster, he wasn’t about to give away any secrets about the lineup. He cited that the Rangers are missing Corey Seager and Josh Jung, both of whom could play in “A” games on Saturday.
Would Bochy be comfortable nestling him between Seager, the No. 2 hitter, and Adolis García, the cleanup hitter? So, if he Rangers knew he’d make the lineup all spring, how hard was it for Bochy to keep a straight face every time he was asked about Langford’s latest rocket or his chances of breaking camp on the roster?last July, Langford has run all the way through the Rangers’ farm system. He started last season with High-A Hickory and was promoted twice,, Rangers beat writer/insider.
