West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested Friday and charged with a DUI, according to the city of Pittsburgh. The incident comes just over a month after Huggins used an anti-gay slur in a live radio interview. More:
, reduced his salary by $1 million and amended his contract, changing his multiyear deal to a year-by-year agreement. Huggins was also required to undergo training sessions with WVU’s LGBTQ+ Center.president E. Gordon Gee and athletic director Wren Baker said in a statement that it was made “explicitly clear to coach Huggins that any incidents of similar derogatory and offensive language will result in immediate termination.
The live radio incident came during a call-in segment on 700 WLW with prominent and longtime Cincinnati talk-radio host Bill Cunningham. Huggins was asked a question about Xavier University, his former crosstown basketball rival from his time as coach at the University of Cincinnati . Huggins twice used an anti-gay slur when referring tofans, describing them as “f—, Catholic f—,” also denigrating Xavier’s Jesuit religious affiliation in the process.
Huggins was previously arrested for DUI in Cincinnati in June 2004, an incident which later included a public release of dashcam footage of the arrest. Huggins, the coach of at the time, resigned in August 2005 after being forced out by university president Nancy Zimpher for what she described as leadership that did not fit with her plan to improve the program’s academic reputation.Required reading
