Shein, one of the world's largest online fashion retailers, is set to appoint Marcelo Claure, a former executive at SoftBank, as its Latin America chairman
Shein’s appointment of Mr. Claure, who will help oversee the company’s operations and strategy in Latin America, is also part of its efforts to expand its reach to suppliers and partners in the region, with a primary focus on Brazil and Mexico, the people said.
Part of Mr. Claure’s focus will be on building supply chains in Brazil and throughout the region by partnering with local businesses and manufacturers, the people said. Shein, founded in Nanjing in China’s Jiangsu province in 2012, relocated its global headquarters to Singapore in 2021 and has increased its head count in the city-state from five people to about 100 as of late last year, The Wall Street JournalShein has been diversifying its supply chain and building an on-the-ground presence in markets around the world to lessen its heavy reliance on Chinese suppliers.
Shein has faced questions in the U.S. over allegations of using cotton from China’s Xinjiang region, where authorities are accused of suppressing the Uyghur Muslim population. The company told investors in a December memo that it doesn’t have any suppliers in Xinjiang and follows the U.S. policy of not working with entities on the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act’s Entity List, the Journal has reported.
Shein operates with an on-demand manufacturing model that uses proprietary software to monitor production in real time. The company gauges customer preferences and demand using algorithms that incorporate sales, browsing behavior on its app and other data.Copyright ©2022 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
