New speed cameras have been put up on southbound Interstate 5 in Skagit County and eastbound Interstate 90 in Spokane County, as part of a pilot program meant to reduce speed-related collisions.

In Skagit County, the cameras are on southbound I-5 between Bow Hill and Cook roads. In Spokane County, the cameras are on eastbound I-90 between Liberty Lake and the Washington/Idaho state line. The Washington State Department of Transportation selected those areas based on data indicating speed as a significant factor in fatal and serious injury crashes.

"I definitely see a lot of crashes and just like vehicles pulled over, guardrails wrecked," said a driver who uses I-5 every day. "I've definitely seen I-5 closed a lot for fatalities." The cameras will track speed and capture license plates, but no tickets will be issued as this is a pilot program. Instead, drivers will receive a courtesy notice in the mail showing their speed and the potential cost of a ticket for that speed."The goal here is just to get people to drive safer. To slow down," said Amy Moreno, a spokesperson for WSDOT. "There's so much research that shows that people can slow down. Our roadways are going to be a lot safer for everyone.

The speed cameras will be operational from April 10 through June. WSDOT will then analyze the data from the cameras, review public feedback, and report back to the state legislature, which allocated $1 million for this program.
