The writers’ strike that has halted productions across the US, UK and now Australia, could drag on until November, the former US actors’ union boss Melissa Gilbert says.
, was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001 to 2005; since 2012 the guild has been known as SAG-AFTRA.
“The writers are doing a lot of forward-thinking, but there is also a little bit of a disconnect,” Gilbert said, referring to the need to consider atypical writing models, such as single-author television programs, similar to Australian and UK models, which differ from US production models. Of the strike itself, Gilbert said there was tension between the actors and directors in terms of creative rights. “[The question of] who wrote it and whose film is it,” she said. “The actors are a singular group of very unpredictable individuals. So, I don’t know where they will go.“My optimistic prediction is that we will be back in production by August; my pessimistic prediction is we will be back in production by November,” Gilbert said.
