WOW Air joins the growing ranks of failed budget airlines, leaving competing airlines to try to help return stranded passengers with rescue fares.

Icelandic budget airline WOW Air ceased operations on Thursday, stranding passengers across two continents. The airline told passengers there would be no further flights and advised them to check flights with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations.
The Icelandic airline had a near-death experience last year, and sought a merger with Icelandair, which may have beat a hasty retreat after looking at WOW’s financials. “A ‘rescue fare’ is a discounted airfare that member airlines of the International Transport Association offer to passengers stranded in Europe by an airline bankruptcy,” according to Robert Condina, Security Director of Operations at International SOS, the world's largest medical and travel security services firm.
